Smoothies BowlandBlade

Smoothies were always on the Bowl and Blade menu next to the bowls, and they follow the same idea: whole fruit and vegetables, blended, with nothing you would not put in a bowl. Here are our recipes and the simple formula behind them.

How to build a balanced smoothie

A smoothie that keeps you full has more than fruit in it. Use this as a template:

  • Liquid (3/4 to 1 cup): water, coconut water or unsweetened milk. Go easy on juice.
  • Fruit (1 to 1 1/2 cups): mostly frozen, for thickness and cold.
  • Greens (a handful): spinach is invisible; kale is stronger.
  • Protein: Greek yogurt, protein powder or hemp seeds.
  • Fat or fiber: nut butter, chia, flax or a little avocado.

Boosts worth adding

  • Almond butter
  • Peanut butter
  • Protein powder
  • Spirulina
  • Cocoa nibs
  • Matcha powder

One boost per smoothie is plenty. Spirulina and matcha are strong, so start with half a teaspoon.

Smoothie or smoothie bowl?

Same ingredients, less liquid. Cut the liquid to about a third of a cup, blend with the tamper, and you have a bowl you can top. Our açaí bowls are built exactly that way.

Are smoothies healthy?

Made from whole fruit and vegetables, usually yes. We look at the details in Are Fruit Smoothies Healthy?, Can Smoothies Help You Lose Weight? and Why Do Smoothies Make You Bloated?
